Project goals
The redevelopment of Piazza Matteotti restores centrality, quality, and safety to one of the most important public spaces in Padenghe sul Garda.
Site conditions
Before the intervention, Piazza Matteotti had uneven and deteriorated paving, uncoordinated furniture, and a spatial layout that was difficult to read. Circulation for both vehicles and pedestrians was inefficient, with safety issues and limited accessibility for people with reduced mobility.
Design approach
The project introduced a complete reorganization of the square: the carriageway was reduced to enlarge pedestrian areas and improve usability. Native trees were planted, entrances were redefined, and all urban furniture was replaced. The new layout encourages longer stays and social interaction, strengthening the identity of the historic center.
Details and materials
The design remained consistent with the historical context, using natural and traditional materials such as red porphyry cobblestones for the roadway and Lessinia stone for the pedestrian areas. Urban furniture was redesigned with a sober and functional language: concrete benches, removable bollards, and integrated public lighting. Special care was given to removing architectural barriers to ensure inclusivity and safety for all users.
