Project goals

The aim was to redevelop the historic center of Castenedolo with two main objectives: reduce vehicle traffic along Via Matteotti and strengthen the connections between the main public buildings — Town Hall, Church, Civic Hall, and Schools — through a coherent and accessible architectural language.

Site conditions

The central street was heavily trafficked and disconnected from the pedestrian urban fabric. Connections between the main public spaces were unclear and fragmented, with architectural barriers and underused public areas.

Design approach

The project redefined mobility and urban hierarchy through a unified ground design. A continuous pedestrian axis was created to connect the main public hubs, combined with traffic-calming strategies. Intersections were redesigned as raised platforms level with the sidewalks, while the roadway was narrowed to return space and ensure greater pedestrian safety. The intervention extended across the entire center, creating a continuous and accessible network.

Details and materials

The urban design was carried out with uniform cobblestone paving, intersected by granite strips acting as traffic deterrents. New pedestrian areas — such as Piazza Martiri della Libertà, transformed into a tree-lined square, and Via Gramsci, fully pedestrianized — were completed with coordinated urban furniture, helping to build a strong and recognizable identity for Castenedolo’s center.
